The 7 Glyphs

The 7 Glyphs appeared on www.bungie.org around the same time that word of yet another Bungie game was in the works, code named "Phoenix". At first we thought there might be a hard link between the Glyphs and Phoenix. However, we've been assured that that is not the case. These symbols have been present on www.bungie.org for some time, only now are we being teased with what they might hold.

Here are the 7 glyphs as they appear on Bungie.org. They make up the puzzle which we have no rules.

Here are the same glyphs in a larger format, courtesy of Miguel Chavez (aka Freewill, the man with the bs)

• (6/6/01) Nicolas writes "Many pyramids, including the famed Quetzalcoatl Pyramid, had seven stages or steps. ("seven steps down a building.") " 7, indeede... interesting.... Honestly I blame all of this on Hamish.

• (6/3/01) Jeff Greenland points out the obvious, but very worth mentioning, its most likely the glyphs have to do with phoenix. Now we all know what a phoenix is (firey bird which is raised from ashes) but could it simply mean a "rebirth" in this case? A rebirth of what? "I'm going to tell you what the good Hippieman wants to know: The goal is rooted in Marathon. Deeply. " hummmm... classic gaming rebirth.

• (6/03/01) Rolly sends in a webpage that helps in deciphering ancient languages, you can find it here.

• (6/3/01) Jon Chambers writes about trying to align the glyphs so that they go together. I would like to take this moment to propose something. Ok, Hamish refers to the symbols as "Dials" not Glyphs. Now think about a Sun Dial. Basically something in the middle points to something on the outside edge, and out of the stuff on the edge only the part being pointed to is important. So are the numbers on the edge all part of the puzzle? Or are they answers, and this is a big multiple choice question?

• (6/3/01) Weepul 884 notices http://www.bungie.org/images/glyphs.jpg

• (6/2/01) Dave writes listing several general facts about the glyphs, while these are just basic observations, perhaps there is a pattern hidden in their simplify.

*There are eight numbers per glyph - could this be a byte of info?

*Total of 56 numbers

*Total of 37 distinct numbers

*Only the sixth glyph has a duplicated number (15).

*The smallest number is 0 and the largest is 112.

*Smallest interval between numbers is 1; largest is 22

*No number appears more than three times

And a frequency count gives you:

0 (2)
2(1)
3 (2)
4(1)
6(1)
7(1)
8(1)
10(1)
11(1)
12(1)
13(2)
14(2)
15(3)
18(1)
19(2)
20(3)
22(3)
24(1)
25(2)
26(1)
27(2)
36(1)
38(1)
33(1)
41(1)
47(1)
48(1)
50(2)
51(1)
62(1)
66(1)
67(1)
70(1)
71(1)
75(1)
97(1)
112(1)

With roughly half the numbers being less than 30.

• (5/30/01) Magnus Esko writes how the glyphs remind him of clocks that show what time it is in other countries, but because they are not clocks, perhaps they are (teleport) navigation symbols.

• (5/30/01) Tycho has looked at the ASCII codes for the numbers for each glyph. They are:

1. % DC3 2 > K DC4 CAN )
2. STX 0 EM VT & C FF F
3. ! SYN NUL ACK CR DC4 G SO
4. 2 CR SUB SYN q % BS BEL
5. SI 3 TAB NUL / EM SYN STX
6. LF EOT SI P SO SI DC4 B
7. CAN ETX a VT S DC3 $ DC2

Where:

DC0-4 = Device Control 0-4
CAN = Cancel
STX = Start of Text
EM = End of Medium
VT = Vertical Tab
FF = Form Feed
SYN = Synchronous Idle
NUL = Null
ACK = Acknowledge
CR = Carriage Return
SO = Shift Out
SUB = Substitute
BS = Backspace
BEL = Bell
SI = Shift In
TAB = horizontal tab
LF = New Line
EOT = End of Transmission
ETX = End of Text

So those of you who are über 1337, check that out 'cause it's all gibberish to me ;).

• (5/30/01) In response to a post suggesting that the puzzle is numeric only, Claude just has to say "It's NOT safe to say that! The-mmfffhmffhughh...." so perhaps we are looking for a word? maybe it fills in a URL? like http://________.bungie.org (or .com) and the story or answer to the puzzle is there.
