JNAMSFTFY

Longtime Bungie fans will need no introduction or explanation as to the meaning of the letters above, but in case you've come in to this warm hovel from out in the cold, dark wasteland of the "other" game communities, I offer the following.

(NOTE: UPDATED 04-03-2006)
The comments are now locked, because 343 is a good number and this post needs to be cleaned up and started again at a later date. Check this post for a new start on the acronyms.

As far back as Marathon, Bungie has been putting an acronym on the boxes of their released products (games, soundtracks, etc.). The acronym is made up of the first letters of some phrase that was popular and/or otherwise notable within the Bungie offices during the development of whatever game/soundtrack it's on. You can read about the past acronyms here. The most up-to-date list of the acronyms and their Bungie-verified solutions is as follows.

Acronym Game Solution
DMUKYA Marathon Don't Make Us Kick Your Ass
MBIBTYB Marathon 2 My Bob Is Bigger Than Your Bob
TBWSAF Marathon ∞ and Trilogy Trick Bitch Whore Slut Ass Fucker
WACCSMD Myth Warcraft And Command & Conquer, Suck My Dick
MRTEFCFY Myth Soundtrack
TATRTSTS Myth II
WUBNMH Myth II Soundtrack What's Up, Bitch? Not Much, Holmes
SPMLOAS Myth Total Codex
YYMMDBATC Myth TC Soundtrack Yummy, Yummy, Munchy, Munchy, Dwarven Bones Are Tasty Crunchy
ABTFIPASO5 Halo (GotY)
SABABWL Halo Soundtrack
ILWNL Halo PC
JNAMSFTFY Halo 2
EGATFIBGBCSIMAW Halo 2 Soundtrack Vol 1
MNNGSBTFS Halo 2 Soundtrack Vol 1
IOHBOY Halo 2 In-game map (Metropolis)
SIOHBOY Halo 2 In-game credits
TOFTMTWCLMB Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack

(WACCSMD and WUBNMH have never been publicly acknowledged as correctly solved, but perhaps we can get some input here and finally nail those down ;-))

So, the one in the title of this post is from (you guessed it) the Limited Collectors Edition Halo 2 box. The ones that have been solved over the years have a certain 'Bungie' feel to them, so think a bit and take a guess. First one right gets automatic street cred and bragging rights, which ain't half bad. ;-)

Update: According to an official source, WUBNMH is correct except for one word.
Update 2: Max Hoberman, dashing Multiplayer Lead at Bungie, checks in with the following:

"I got your official confirmation right here. WACCSMD has been translated correctly. Foul mouthed Bungie!

TATRTSTS. Ah, that's a good guess, very much in the spirit of things. But it's wrong :-)

And yes, Mr. Sharumpe's suggestion is correct about EGATFIBGBCSIMAW being an acronym on the soundtrack.

MRTEFCFY is damn tough to crack. But I'll give you a clue. It came up in a conversation recently due to a certain completely unexpected relationship between Myth: TFL and Halo 2."

He also goes on to mention:

"The 15 letter one is a clue to a puzzle of sorts."

Update 3: MNNGSBTFS was first noticed (I think) here.
Update 4: IOHBOY and SIOHBOY have been noticed for awhile, also. Here is the first mention of either of them I can find.
Update 5: I kind of hate to add to this entry, since it's grown to completely useless proportions, but for the sake of continuity I'll add TOFTMTWCLMB here. ;-)

Correction-- It's "Trick Bitch Whore Slut Ass Fucker."

I don't know if this has been said, but the back of the normal Halo 2 case has the same acronym. What do all the Halo/Halo 2 Acronyms stand for?

Posted by: Brian on November 10, 2004 5:11 PM

Halo 2 Soundtrack acronym is (maybe):
EGATFIBGBCSIMAW

I have no clue as to the meaning...

Halo 2 (LE) : JNAMSFTFY: "Jumbo Nobel Ass Mother Sucker Fuck The Fuck Yeah". Just a thought.

i don't think bungie would ust quite as much needless profanity as huaratron suggests.

Could the Halo PC one be "I Like Windows, Not Linux"?

As for the new one, no clue whatsoever. :)

Whopie. Stuff to update the trivia quiz with.

Posted by: poena.dare (not.dead.yet) on November 10, 2004 6:40 PM

P.S. Weren't we reasonably sure SPMLOAS stood for "Single Player Myth, Lots Of Additional Shit"?

Posted by: poena.dare (not.dead.yet) on November 10, 2004 6:48 PM

I've found out that the suggestion I had for TATRTSTS was way off base, so it gets demoted. WUBNMH is also "officially" not exactly correct, but it's close.

Posted by: mnemesis on November 10, 2004 6:48 PM

ILWNL stands for I like winning, not losing i think

It makes it a point quite frequently in the novels about how master chief never loses.

My thinkings with the Halo cover acronym involve a spoiler for halo 2 (kinda). So warnings before reading this.

The "S05" is making me think Station 05. As in another Halo. The ABTF makes me think something along the lines of "After Beathing the Flood".. i just am not sure about the IPA part...
Or maybe I'm just trying to find a serious answer.

Posted by: JeffB2006 on November 10, 2004 9:44 PM

I seem to remember one suggestion for TATRTSTS, "Total Annhilation, The Real-Time Strategy That Sucks", which seems in the same spirit as WACCSMD.

And 15 letters?!? Sheesh! ;-)

Posted by: mnemesis on November 10, 2004 10:59 PM

WUBNMH - perhaps "What's up Bitch? Not much, Ho.

WUBNMH - What's Up Bitch? Not Much Homie?

Posted by: Coolhand2 on November 10, 2004 11:29 PM

Damn, you guys are good at acronyms. WUBNHM could be What's up bitch? Not much honey. I know, I'm an idiot.

Posted by: Slimby on November 10, 2004 11:30 PM

As for the WUBNMH, if it's only one word that's incorrect I'd guess it was What's Up Bro(ther)? Nothin' Much Holmes. Just my two cents

Posted by: Yams on November 11, 2004 12:48 AM

There was a reference made to halo and myth in one of the magazine articles in the November 2004 issue of Xbox Nation if I remember correctly. It stated that Master Chief and the protagonist from Myth were indeed one in the same. It is stated when XBN looks back at Halo 1 in an interview with one of the developers who is no longer employed by Bungie. I can't get to the mag right now but anyone who can, please post the reference.

Posted by: Loaded Dice on November 11, 2004 10:32 AM

That was Alex referring to the Security Officer from Marathon, ie not anything from Myth.

How about : Just Not Another MicroSoft Fuck Tard, Fuck You!

Too me the MS is obvious. Bungie's penchant for explicatives also make sense, if only they had used a tkfd. It kinda looks like a puma.

I have a strong belief that the long-ass Halo 2 Soundtrack acronym stands for the skulls found in the Halo 2 campaign:

EGATFIBGBCSIMAW

Envy
G...?
Anger
Thunderstorm
Famine
Infinite
Blind
Grunt
Birthday
Catch
Sputnik
Iron
M.....?
Assassins
W.....?

The others are for the other levels that the skulls are found on. Grunt Birthday Patry is only on one so that frees up another level...

From the marathon story pages...

Forrest Cameranesi writes concerning the acronym TATRTSTS found on the Myth II: Soulblighter box:

Tsao from The Asylum suggests that Myth II's TATRTSTS may mean "Total Annihilation: The Real-Time Strategy That Sucks", as that fits in with Bungie's insult to Warcraft and Command & Conquer in TFL's WACCSMD.

Posted by: duo on November 17, 2004 12:03 AM

The "Mystic" skull has been found since my last post. That fills in the "M", leaving G and W.
So far so good.

I think I must have an extra special special edition copy. Mine has no such JNAMSFTFY acronym anywhere on the box at all!

Posted by: wig on November 17, 2004 12:45 AM

Really? It's not on the box itself, but on the plastic sleeve that the box comes in, and it's on the back down near the bottom.

Is there anything *else* on there? Another one, perhaps?

Posted by: mnemesis on November 17, 2004 12:48 AM

Grunt Birthday is one skull... one of the B's is the Black Eye skull I think... it's been confirmed that the Black Eye Skull exists

el zilcho nemesis, no acronyms or anything out of the ordinary. It is the pal version though, maybe that makes a difference?

Posted by: wig on November 17, 2004 1:52 AM

The Halo 2 Box maybe MSFT has something to do with Microsoft (It is their ticker symbol isnt it?) Just a guess...

Posted by: Ace on November 17, 2004 2:59 AM

I haven't played Halo 2 yet, but with Envy right there, just throwing out that the G might be 'Greed' and maybe the W 'War'

Posted by: GamelordZX on November 17, 2004 10:07 AM

The Skulls page at High Impact Halo really pins down the fact that the Soundtrack acronym refers to these; as of right now, 12 are listed, and all match. (The missing three are G, B, W.)

Skulls page URL, because MT isn't html-friendly:

http://www.highimpacthalo.org/skulls.htm

Posted by: Claude Errera on November 17, 2004 3:38 PM

If Black Eye is confirmed, then there's only G and W left to find.

So, it looks like a "Ghost" skull has been found by Nuva Kaita over at HIH (http://highimpacthalo.org/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1255&start=135). If this is true, and the Black Eye skull represents one of the two B's, then the only one left (at least as far as this acronym goes) is the "W" skull. Assuming all THAT is true, the acronym would be one of these:

Envy, Grunt, Assassins, Thunderstorm, Famine, Infinite, Blind, Ghost, Black, Catch, Sputnik, Iron, Mystic, Anger, W...

EGATFIBGBCSIMAW

Envy
Ghost
Anger
Thunderstorm
Famine
Infinite
Blind
Grunt
Birthday (or Black eye)
Catch
Sputnik
Iron
Mystic
Assassins
W.....?

Posted by: n_nlemon on November 18, 2004 1:05 PM

W... It must be short for "What The Fudge"!

..does this skull mean - it doesn't read anything when I pick it up?

Posted by: Twelve Large on November 18, 2004 4:59 PM

I think the last skull would have to be war, but, there are a lot of words that start with W...

Also, concerning M.C. and the guy from Marathon? What the hell... There has GOT to be a connection here. I've never played Marathon but I heard some of the maps are the same, not to mention that the logo can be used. In the conversations throughout the universe booklet, there is a letter from Cassandra to John/117, or, MC. Anybody know of a Cassandra or a John from Marathon? Or do you mean the guy from Marathon was a SPARTAN.

Although I'm getting off track, the skulls might lead back to the marathon series, somehow, maybe it'll help somebody think of the W, word.

Not to spam... feel free to join my sites forums (www.clan.mrminotaur.u4w.com, it's a Halo clan) and specuate there, as well as here.

Assasins
Thunderstorm
Famine
**I would have been your daddy** (new)
Blind
Ghost
Black Eye
Catch
Sputnik
**Ice Cream** (new)
Mythic
Angry
**Whuppopotamus** (new)

The marathon guy wasn't a spartan and the only things he came into contact with were 3 computer AI's (named Durandal, Tycho and ermm i forget :/) and a whole bunch of dudes all named "Bob".
It was speculated that he was an android, I still kind of think MC is an android aswell.
They are kinda similar, but I can't explain how. Maybe its just nostalgia.

Envy, Ghost, Anger, Thunderstorm, Famine, Infinite, Black, Grunt, Blind, Catch, Sputnik, Iron, Mystic, Assassins, W...

I tried picking up the skulls in this order, but I ran into a roadblock - I couldn't find the supposed "Infinite" skull. So I skipped it and picked up the rest of them in no particular order. Well, I guess you could call it "pussy order", since I left skulls like "Black Eye", "Assassins" and "Blind" for last.

Oh, yeah.. This shit IS HARD. The battle that takes place during the Chief's objective to free the two groups of Marines held up inside High Charity was fugging insane during my hunt. I don't remember it being that hard my first time through the campaign on the Legendary setting. I'm thinking it may have had something to do with Ghost, but mabey not. Also, going for the "Catch" skull sucked big ones. There's nothing like making your way to the end of the bridge, hitting a checkpoint, and finding out these three Banshees are FUCKING INVINCIBLE. What the fudge is that? So we have to track back to the beginning of the level, to grab the raggity ass Warthog, which will be blown sky high (thanks sputnik) 19 out of 20 times - When it comes to speeding through this deathtrap at the end of the bridge. Not to mention it takes around seven minutes to travel from one end of the bridge to the other in that piece of a tank you all call a Scorpion. And I don't even wanna talk about going back to try and find "Inifinite" after my hunt, find, and activation of the fourteen known skulls in one sitting. :\

What a waste of time.

..I should do it again someday.

FTFY is possibly "For Three/Ten F...ing Years". Three, because that's how long Halo 2 took to make, and Ten, because it's Marathon's Tenth Anniversary in December.

So, maybe, "Jason, Not Another Marathon Story For Ten F...ing Years". Somebody could be getting a bit sick of this motif.

People were talking about a skull that doesn't have a name. Two speculations on this.

1. You picked it up and forgot/died and picked it up again thus it will have no name.

2. It is the W skull and it will have a name if you pick up the rest of the skulls in the right order and you will solve the puzzle.

Posted by: Shortest Hill on November 20, 2004 12:22 PM

hey i'm new to hih but i agree with you guys and i am glad i checked that site cuz when i first found envy and famine skulls i thought they were just easter eggs and had no idea you could even pick them up until i read your guys' thingamabobs. ever since i have been hunting them down but i think in order to activate whatever the secret is, i believe we have to get them in the order of the acronym cuz w is the last one and has no name but maybe if we get them all in order before that one, maybe it will? please resond somebdy cuz i think we should seriously try it out. -peace

MRTEFCFY

its says the only clue we have about this one is that Halo 2 and Myth CTF have some sort of connection that no one expected.

The only thing I can think of is that elites go "wort wort wort" in both halos, and that is "trow trow trow" backwards....

could that be the key?

There is one problem with the solution I gave to figuring out the puzzle to the skulls. First of all, if my calulations are correct (and they could be off), there are 16 different combinations we could try because of the four duplicate letters in EGATFIBGBCSIMAW. The A's, G's, B's, and I's. If we get a large group of people to cooperate with each other then we could have at least one person trying each combination. What do you guys think?

Posted by: Shortest Hill on November 21, 2004 3:05 AM

Sorry, I don't mean to post so much but I did find out one more thing about the skulls. When you pik one up, if you turn off your Xbox, then you will lose that skull so any attempts to try and get this puzzle figured out will have to be in one sitting, or at least not turning off your Xbox.

Posted by: Shortest Hill on November 21, 2004 3:18 AM

Because the W is the last you maybe have to pick up the rest of the skulls in order first an then get the "WIN" skull or something..

Posted by: Jonas on November 21, 2004 8:00 PM

haha u guys are crazy dedicated. but meh ill try one of the combinations. but can u do it on co-op? cuz im sure i could get maybe 2 done then with my friend.

I know you can pick the skulls up in co-op but I don't know if you can collect all of them like we need to do in order to solve the puzzle.

And remember, you have to get all the skulls without turning off your Xbox.

JNAMSFTFY could be "Jason Needs Another Marathon Story For This Fucking Year" Or something along those lines.

haha u doubt me and my friends abilities. I have the auto turn off setting off and my xbox is in my basement where its nice and cool. So this, hypothetically, should let me keep it on indefinatly... just gemme an order and ill give it my best.

JNAMSFTFY could be "Jason Needs Another Mega Story For This Fucking Year"

Or It could be "Just Not Another Marathon Story For Ten Fucking Years" For might be "from" like, from ten years of hard work. Which may mean, the marathon story was not so good...

Just random guesses.

Posted by: z!nk on November 22, 2004 9:43 PM

Okay, so the current skulls are:

Envy
Ghost
Anger
Thunderstorm
Famine
I.....? (could be "invisible")
Blind
Grunt B-day party
Black eye
Catch
Sputnik
Iron
Mythic
Assassins
W.....?

(Quoting Enigmatist here: http://highimpacthalo.org/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1359&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15)

I'll stake a claim on 'W' standing for Wrath. No idea what level it will be on - but it would make some sense to have it on 'The Great Journey'.

And which of the sixteen combinations is the one that works? Maybe it doesn't matter - or maybe there's a pattern to it.

Posted by: Flashman on November 22, 2004 10:20 PM

I Think i saw somewhere that there was an infinite skull, and that could what the other I means, but i'll get back on that

Posted by: Ribok126 on November 23, 2004 7:44 AM

EGATFIBGBCSIMAW

I don't think it means anything. I think it's just a clue, as Max Hoberman says. So, we know that there are 15 skulls in the game, and we're missing one, except if the "No name" skull is the last one to collect and has only a "name" if it's the last one to be collected (Maybe WIN). Maybe you will solve the puzzle if you collect them in the order of the "acronym", maybe not (referring to a post in Bungie.net forums, someone said that different numbers were put next to the skulls, so maybe do we have to collect them according to the "numbers". Example : notice the "8" into the "scope" near the blind skull - So it's maybe the 8th, or the 12th if you add the 4 grenades :s ...).

(Pss, we'll solve the puzzle and unlock something like an audio file "You worked hard to unlock this. Good job! See ya." and nothing else, like in Outcast :p ... )

TBWSAF

Guys, this stands for Too Bad We Stopped After Four. This is in reference to the four related games dealing with Marathon:

Pathways into Darkness
Marathon
Marathon 2: Durandal
Marathon: Infinity

You can check the Marathon Story page too.

Posted by: Ender on November 23, 2004 4:36 PM

Envy
Ghost
Anger
Thunderstorm
Famine
Infinate
Blind
Grunt B-day party
Black eye
Catch
Sputnik
Iron
Mythic
Assassins

Maybe collect in this (or the other listed) order(s) beat all the levels they are on then get the no-name skull at the armory. Maybe it will be givin a name (Win?) *realy hopes it unlockes another single player level after the great journey*

Posted by: Snake eye on November 23, 2004 5:02 PM

If someone could find the other "I" skull (infinite?) then we could begin trying the different combinations. There was an unconfirmed report of it being in The Quarintined(spelling?) Zone but the description was pretty vague. Something about using a tnk to get to a high ledge and running across the map. Dunno if this will help, but it would be pointless to try and find all the skulls before we know where this one is at. As soon as it is confirmed we will try the combinations.

Just to let everyone know, there is no Infinite skull. The person who made it up confessed and a real skull that starts with "I" has been confirmed. It's on outskirts in a little room with sniper ammo and a number 17 on the wall. The trigger(s) to make it appear seem to be random so far. Once you pick up the skull you are transported and have to fight many elites. If you win the fight, you see the name of the skull: I Would Have Been your Daddy.

Posted by: ben on November 25, 2004 5:03 AM

Do you guys realise that when this is all figured out and the secret of the skulls is truly unlocked then MC's final battle will be the reward.....This wouls also support that fact that there is not going to be a Halo 3 (apparently)

I posted this list on the 19th of Nov (look up the page) and it contained the "I would of been your daddy" entry. I believe the only thing that was wrong is that ice cream should be "Iron" and that the "Whuppopotamus" is the armoury skull.

Envy
Grunt Birthday Party
Assasins
Thunderstorm
Famine

W(?)

As for the W, there is a skull called "Will" that has been unconfirmed. It is apparently on the second arbiter level in a pipe somewhere.

Nobody is quite sure what the no-name Armoury skull does yet. disscusions are continuing.

Go to the bungie.net forums under the catagory "New Mombasa" for the thread "EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT THE SKULLS". It has all this and more.

Posted by: laser on November 26, 2004 1:44 AM

hello. this "I would have been your daddy" skull... why is it so much more complex to 'activate' than the other skulls? and it doesn't say anything when you first get the skull, eh? so you need to kill the Elites and such to make it do the words.... so, is it safe to assume that the very first skull in the Armoury also needs to be activated somehow like this one? maybe I'm missing something, but eh... I wish Bungie would at least confirm that all our trouble will provide something nice if we keep searching as hard as we are. I feel sorry for anyone who's actually trying to collect all 15 skulls on Legendary at once, if it doesn't do anything in the end. heh. I wish there was a way to at least save your progress or eh....

Posted by: chickenmouth on November 26, 2004 2:35 AM

mmm.. you might disregard my last comment. somehow it didn't register in my head that it teleported you somewhere when you pick up the Daddy skull, somewhat forcing you to 'activate' it... but eh... still, the words don't pop up immediately so there may be some connection. blah.

Posted by: chickenmouth on November 26, 2004 2:39 AM

Here's my plan. I've went ahead and taken the time to copy my original profile to my memory card. I then rename my oglp (original gangster legendary profile) -> settings -> profile -> edit. I then copy the oglp from my memory card to my hdd. I rename it "ENVY". I do this sixteen times over until I've made it all the way to "morecowbellbitch". So now I have all 16 profiles named after skulls and retarded ship... With each one saved at the checkpoint before skull pickup/activation.

p.s. I'll never get past those elites, though. So let's help each other work on a strategy that pwns the "I would of been your daddy" activation. One that works when you don't happen to have unlimited cloaking abilities. :(

While the TBWSAF acronym was a series of profane words there was actually a reason behind it. As Matt Soell pointed out it was a tongue-in-cheek response to a rather profane letter sent in to the Bungie Webmaster." ~Hamish

Posted by: Andrew Nagy on November 26, 2004 2:32 PM

You guys that are busy trying to fit curse words in the acronym... you're not getting it. Bungie doesn't liberally sprinkle curse words around. As Nagy points out, it is done selectively if at all.

All of these are confirmed and proven except the last one. I think that when you pick up all the skulls in that order then pick up the armoury skull (Wordless) then Cowbell is what pops up. If you collect the skulls in the wrong order it says "That's just....Wrong" I think the W stands for Wordless.

Posted by: Draco on November 28, 2004 10:33 PM

I picked up the skulls in this order..

Envy, Grunt, Assassins, Thunderstorm, Famine, I Would Of Been Your Daddy, Blind, Ghost, Black, Catch, Sputnik, Iron, Mystic, Anger, W...

..And nothing, nadda, zilch. I also completed the game with all of them active, and received the same results... Nothing. Totally AWESOME!

Could it be that there is no meaning behind collecting every skull? :O! Maybe these skulls just have effects that were in the game, but once removed because bungie felt for some reason it was best. So they just added them back in as eggs.. Some of them as smelly rotten ones.

Also, maybe there are hints thrown about near these skulls that help in solving the actual anogram, rather than some larger puzzle we thought up on our own?

Maybe the ''W'' stands for an Emotion, like ''Worry'' something like that, some skull names are emotions like ''A'' which means ''Anger'', or maybe the ''W'' stands for World, you know, like World Domination, Bungie is always commenting that they want to achieve World Domination and all that stuff i don't really know,i am just throwing in my 2 cents, i could be wrong, let's all hope that these freaking enigmas bungie leaves behind get solved one day.

It would be cool if there wasn't gonna be a Halo 3 because the Halo creators secretly hid the rest of the game inside of the second Halo, but I wouldn't wanna do the legendary skull search thing in order like everyone is saying because that sounds repetitive and as hard as hell. Where as the skull list is not entirely the acronym (done on purpose I assume):

Posted by: Joe on December 5, 2004 8:00 PM

Sorry, Mike, but the 3rd Halo book, First Strike, by Eric Nylund revealed the reasons behind Sergeant Johnson's escape from Halo.

*Spoiler*
His nervous system was scrambled by a disease he recieved from using too many plasma grenades, but he refused treatment. Because his nervous system was scrambled so badly, the Flood couldn't force a match to take over his body with, so they left him and moved onto different prey. He was picked up by the last remaining Pelican dropship and the four surviving crew linked up with the Master Chief after Halo was destroyed.

The rest of the story details their capture of a Covenant Flagship, the rescue of several other SPARTAN II's and Dr. Halsey from Reach, a very strange gravity-reversing artifact, and finally a lesson learned by the Master Chief: That everybody may have a different role in the future, and therefore sacrificing one for the good of many might not work out so well.

This is very well demonstrated by the circumstances that bring the Sergeant Johnson together with the Master Chief and the Arbiter, and the crucial role he plays.
*end spoiler*

Hey to everybody, my dad just got home from work. He works for the bungie.net corporation and he told me the exact order to get the skulls. I would get them my self but im not one of the best players out there so here is the list. And by the way, u did not get this infromation off me, because if Bungie.net finds out about this, they will probably fire my dad so don't tell.

1. Envy
2. Ghost
3. Anger
4. ThunderStorm
5. Famine
6. I would have been your daddy
7. Blind
8. Grunt
9. Black
10. Catch
11. Sputnik
12. Iron
13. Mystic
14. Assassins
15. Winner

Posted by: UNKNOWN on December 19, 2004 6:53 PM

Hey, my dad also told me after you found all of the skulls in order, there will be a secret ending, but he dont know what kind of ending it is, because thats classified infromation. Only little people that work for the Bungie.Net Corporation know what kind of ending it is.

Posted by: UNKNOWN on December 19, 2004 7:05 PM

Oh man, that was F~n sweet!!!! Tell you dad i love him. MC is a pimp. He never loose ya know

Posted by: zack on December 19, 2004 10:48 PM

Posted by: Skinmeister on December 20, 2004 6:39 PM

what the hell is the winner skull and where could it be found

i and my bro have been tryin to get all the skulls just it is repetitive

and what about the super weapons like the scarab gun which i heard was part of another Acronym

Posted by: HT5 on December 20, 2004 11:44 PM

Well the thing is, i doubt that bungie will find out about this, and the winner skull is the same thing as the w...? that yall posted. And I know nothing about getting the Scarab gun to use. But I know for a fact that on January 15, 2005, bungie is putting new stages for you to download on xbox live. That's just something that you all should know. And why do we have aol, (you asked) because maybe we like to get online and look at stuff!!!! well i got to get off of here. see ya

Posted by: UNKNOWN on December 21, 2004 12:51 AM

Actually, I must confess. My dad doesn't work for the Bungie.Net Corporation. Sorry, I just wanted all of you to listen to me. I hope you forgive me, I didn't want to cause any trouble. Good luck with the skulls... I am still stuck trying to get them.

Posted by: UNKNOWN on December 21, 2004 1:11 PM

Man... i hope someone can figure this out... maybe someone could email bungie and they might be nice enough to help us out :)

Here is a new one, straight from Halo 2: IOHBOY

I found it after dying, my camera angle went berserk and ended up displaying a wall with those letters on it! It was on the Metropolis level.

Man...Bungie's developers are so confusing...

Posted by: Fredgeot on December 24, 2004 10:03 AM

the Scarb gun is at metropolis level u need 2 move the banshee all the way through the tunnel, then u will find a hole after coming out of the tunnel fly the banshee and there will b a plasma rifle floating above a cone, pick it up (stand back because when u shot u will go flying).

Posted by: Magicstyck500 on December 26, 2004 4:34 PM

You guys are right, EGATFIBGBCSIMAW stands for the skulls. I havn't found all the skulls yet, and some im not good enough to get. I do know that I Would Have Been Your Daddy is a skull. Theres no infinite. And Whumpupottamus, or w/e u guys said, fits the description of the skull i found at the Great Journey. My shields stopped recharging, but when i melee shields come back, and I meleed upto overshield. Maybe this helps, maybe not. All I know is I knew of the skull referance for about 3 weeks before i read this, but... JNAMSFTFY has me completely dumbfounded.

Posted by: Chill on December 26, 2004 7:41 PM

I found all the skulls in any or every order and still zilch although i was playing oddball on xbox live at zanzibar after pressing the BSOD and the skull that i was carrying went all haywire on me and some how the game stopped and no 1 had left except the skull never came back and then i died from the gurdians. This is all true i swear 2 u.

Posted by: magicstyck500 on December 26, 2004 9:06 PM

ok so there must be a connection between the BSOD on zanzibar and on delta halo there has gotta be a message i'm new here but i've beatin every difficulty, gotten every skull, and still wut am i rewarded with some weird FMV at the end of the credits? This has got 2 end guys we should band together nd play halo 2 campignh from dawn till dusk that is how deprite i am 2 now the secret ( and it better be a good one or i'm gonna kick some halo 2 game gesighner ass!)

Posted by: magicstyck500 on December 26, 2004 9:12 PM

Breakthrough(almost) wel i was just playing either outskirts or mertropolis and i found a intersing swahili sign i dunno wut the hell it says but wut ever it means could be something very improtant 2 out questions. If u know swahili uhh well thats weird, but i will research it.

Posted by: magicstyck500 on December 26, 2004 9:19 PM

ok this is really really erie i found out wut the swahili meant it means FORERUNNER COMPANY!So the question is raised in-game why the covenant decided to land there. In that level, they end up heading straight at that building. Any thoughts? That also raises the question could the forerunners worked with the humans? Could it be the exciting conclusion of halo 3? This is a tense moument i think i'm gunna cry. All signs r pointing 2 yes that the humans worked with the forerunners but the files of that may have been broken by the guily sparks also bringing in the flood, ok the humans and forerunners r on a ship and they see a ring/halo the forerunners a bafounded and start 2 worship this thing while the humans say oh this thing is just some big ass hunk of floating space junk then an uprise bigins, though in the first halo it said the forerunners built halo that may not have been true the guilty sparks could have changed that file so the covenant would believe that the humans had angerd the gods. OK i know i'm a halo/halo 2 fan but this is all just a hunch i belive that it may be true and the key to beholding the story line to halo 3. But that doesn't matter because in halo 4 sarge gets a girlfriend(bungie.net).

JNAMSFTFY- just name a mutha' still fit to fight yeroen ? or "just name another man stuck fighting the flood, yo!"?

Posted by: D on December 27, 2004 1:57 PM

ahh so the pieces r all coming together that means that we need 2 read the halo books 2 understand wut these acronyms mean because these could probably help us wit the skulls.

Posted by: magicstyck500 on December 27, 2004 6:05 PM

THE FORERUNNER COMPANY! thats erie just read my first hunch,k guys it explains everything.

Posted by: magicstyck500 on December 27, 2004 6:15 PM

Hey, maybe after you get all the skulls in the right order, go to zanzibar get the skull, go to the BSOD activate it and smack it with the skull. It says sumthin like "If system does not restart bang on keypad and scream at top of lungs." Just a thought!

Posted by: The Voicez on December 29, 2004 9:37 PM

This below is true! Damien C is a bungie engineer! He is Damian Isla! Note how he says "This is the real deal!" Here is a link to who found this out! I'm just saying this looks to be correct. http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=1302245&postRepeater1-p=2

It is the 8th post down.

I figured out the acronym for the skull list form the soundtrack:

Blind
Ghost
Black Eye
Catch

hey, i am a big fan of this forum and stuff... i really wish that all this work will payoff and that it will open something new in h2. But by looking at the other acronyms i think that the letters relating the skulls are just standing for the names of the skulls... not somecrazy order that they must be picked up in. This does lead to the question as to why the skulls are listed in an order that isnt natural to how you would pick them up in the game. Like i said, i hope that this does uncover some deep halo2 bungie secret.

If only ONE word is wrong in "WUBNMH," then I think that the last word is "Homes," (as in "homeboy"), not "Holmes." I thought "Holmes" was a strange thing to put in that phrase. Just seems out of place. When a guy comes at you saying, "What up, bitch?" its not customary to reply "Not much, Holmes."

EGATFIBGBCSIMAW
you do realise that there are 256 possible permutations of that acronym with some of the skulls initial letter being the same?
that would take....a while, to say the least, to do all of those.
+ some unlucky people would have to do the rest of the skulls with assasins in effect.

Posted by: sam on January 7, 2005 11:58 AM

General musings...

I believe it's in the Halo 2Theatrical Trailer, the one with the www.ilovebees.com ending. If you check it out it shows very short clips from a multiplayer match. If you're quick you can make out "You killed Regret i" and "Johnson killed Pity". It's interesting that there is an "i" after Regret. Perhaps there is a Regret II or something. Pity might be another Prophet or an early name for Mercy that got changed before the game shipped.

Also there is a shot where Master Chief is loading a Sub Machine Gun. On the gun is etched some Asian characters plus "Kai 9x50mm" or something like that. (Not sure, don't have the clip handy right now)

Finally TATRTSTS might be in response to the the Cortana letters (http://marathon.bungie.org/story/cortana.html). Cortana talks about "Receving The Strangest Transmissions Sometimes." RTSTS

That's it.

Posted by: sam on January 13, 2005 12:22 PM

I have only read about halfway down this page, but I have an idea, what if the nameless skull doesn't have a name YET! Maybe it's the last skull and it doesn't get named till you get all the others. Making "win" or "wonderful" good possibilities.

I wonder why the Armory Skull(unnamed) is different to the others? in the fact that you don't have to press "X" to grab it and you just have to touch it or be near it to grab it.

Posted by: Cranberrydude on January 17, 2005 6:35 PM

I think you don't have to "press X" because you don't have a weapon in hand. and you automatically pick up stuff. Try it out on multiplayer, and use the plasma pistol trick to discard all of your weapons.

Posted by: hairyBrute on January 17, 2005 6:59 PM

yea hairy is probably right its not the question of the century but is getting there because we don't know much about the skulls (except that they do stuff to either make the game harder or easier).

Umm... couldn't the connection be foundation? it was in myth too.

Posted by: brandon on January 19, 2005 1:53 AM

Probably, since its so new (foundation).1. it has a picture of some guy with either long hair or girl i can't really tell.2. there is a monkey riding a rocket. And in burial mounds theres that funny thing on the very top, there"why am i here" on that rock at beaver creek, the golden "m" on the very very very top of cougulation, and well that all i know they might be clues, cheats, glicthes i hoenstly can't say.

"MRTEFCFY is damn tough to crack. But I'll give you a clue. It came up in a conversation recently due to a certain completely unexpected relationship between Myth: TFL and Halo 2."

I think the relationship may have to do with Marty the audio director at bungie, he is one of three i believe that have worked on myth and halo 2. In other words, he's been at bungie for a while

I have a suspicion that this final skull, or any other Halo secrets, have something to do with Marathon... The game contains the whole thing with the number '7', as does Halo, with, 1, 7, 8, and 17. Anybody else agree?

Posted by: z!nk on February 16, 2005 9:40 PM

"The 15 letter one is a clue to a puzzle of sorts."

There are presumabely 17 skulls, 16 of which were found. While I agree this has to do with the skulls, it might not, since there are only 15 letters. Maybe there is something we are missing...

But then again, there is the un-named skull, and the final skull, which hasn't been found. Maybe the final skull is impossible to get to, or, just isn't in the actual game, anywhere, or, it's meant to be the last skull, and this acronym is a hint, somehow, in some form.

Maybe I'm reading too deep into this...

Posted by: z!nk on February 16, 2005 9:47 PM

Sorry for the triple post, but...

I also have a suspicion that Halo and Marathon are connected... Maybe in the same universe, and that's all. And Halo and Myth might be connected... Hmmm... Maybe there are hints in Bungie's past games?

Then again, I read too deep into things.

Posted by: z!nk on February 16, 2005 9:50 PM

Boy I wish I could edit, but -

"2. Strangely enough, the group that composed and performed the Marathon 2 music is called Power of Seven."

And the connection between Myth and Halo, would have to do with music...

Maybe Halo and Marathon's connection have to do with music?

Damn me, I feel like a noob with this quadruple post, but I feel the need to say this... I think there might be a connection.

I. Introduction
+---------------+

a. Forward

I would like to start off by thanking you for using my FAQ. Just a quick note,
most of the writings in this FAQ were originally discovered by various people
mostly found on the Bungie.net Forums. I personally have compiled as much
information about the skulls into one, well-written FAQ. As a side note, most
places that have accepted codes or FAQs about the skulls are exact copies of
the original posts from the Bungie Forums. In my attempt, I am going to
clarify, clean up, and maintain all the information about the skulls. Since the
origins of this FAQ, I have also been maintaining all information sent to me by
other people and of my own experiences.

Also, to find specific skulls, search for them by "II.(b|c).(i-xv)". Take the
confirmed status (b or c) and the lower-case roman numeral for the corresponding
skull from the table of contents. Simply "Ctrl+F" for it.

When I use a quote from someone, it will generally not be sic as I try to avoid
that at all costs. Most quotes will be cleaned up or rewritten.

b. Skull History

The first appearance of the hidden skulls was revealed by the user Pirate117 on
the Bungie Forums in a topic titled "HIDDEN ITEM FOUND!!!!" What he revealed
was a secret area in "Outskirts" which contained a pair of scoped binoculars,
four frag grenades, and an Oddball skull that when picked up, it flashed the
words "Blind" on the bottom corner of the screen, and all items from his HUD
disappeared. This was a very significant find, but nobody knew what it could
mean. This caused much excitement on the Bungie Forums, which in turn leaked
into other forums and websites. Some speculated that the skull was for use in
the popular Halo comedy series "Red Vs. Blue" in order to get a full-screen
view of the action, but this "Blind Mode" only worked in single-player, so that
was ruled out. Others believed that this Pirate117 was a Bungie employee who
was setting everyone into the correct direction. Others believed he had
acquired the game before the release date, thus allowing him to have more time
to search for easter eggs such as this.

The conclusion was made that the three items together formed the phrase
"Search For Skulls", each acquiring meaning from the binoculars, four grenades,
and the skull. On a side note, the binoculars zoomed in at 8x instead of the
traditional sniper 10x; this may play an importance in the speculation as well.

It wasn't long before information about other skulls started to form together.
With a boost of confidence, many people began to extensively search all the
levels in Campaign mode, looking for more skulls. It was soon discovered that
most of the skulls could only be found in Legendary, thus scaring away the less-
than-stellar Halo 2 gamers from attempting to help solve this puzzle. With the
miniscule amount of information available about the skulls, some people took
advantage of this and reported legitimate-sounding fake skulls, thus screwing
some people up in their quest for the truth.

Lists began to be compiled, and many others tested the validity of each reported
skull, thus allowing progress to continue at a decent rate. As of now, there
have been fourteen confirmed skull findings, including the original Blind skull,
while there are still a couple odd skulls that cannot be fully confirmed or
tested due to complexities at this time.

c. Version History

1.5.2 - 22-Jan-2005
A few minor layout changes, minor skull updates, JNAMSFTFY update, some other
bits and pieces removed from the FAQ, other theory sections updated to current
findings.

1.5.1 - 16-Jan-2005
A couple ideas submitted for the JNAMSFTFY acronym regarding which skulls they
correspond to. Also updated how to get the Thunderstorm skull.

1.5.0 - 08-Jan-2005
Sorry for the lack of updates (even though they aren't too huge usually), but
I had computer problems and a lack of interest in going online. I've added some
updates accrued from emails to me from you helpful contributors. The acronym
section has been updated again with an interesting find from halomods.com.

1.4.0 - 26-Dec-2004
After a great Christmas, I went back on the internet to check out how I could
update this FAQ. After receiving about 20 emails since last time, I have found
some stuff to update. Some skulls updated, other nitbits. See if you can catch
them all!

1.3.0 - 18-Dec-2004
Made updates to quite a few skulls (after eighty million emails, thank you very
much). Added a couple "features" to the skull detail boxes.

1.2.0 - 14-Dec-2004
Fixed the Envy skull description (wrong area), clarified the Black Eye skull.
Received some information about other things, but not needed to put in the FAQ
yet.

1.1.0 - 11-Dec-2004
After my FAQ finally being put up, I received a few emails already. I have
added an alternate method to finding the Envy skull (which needs to be confirm-
ed as usual) along with the confirmation of the theoretical location of the I
Would Have Been Your Daddy skull, but beyond the pool of blood, we still do not
know if the skull is true. Also, a possibly major addition to the acronym
theory has been added regarding the 8x scope and the possibility of its rele-
vance in accruing the skulls in the correct order.

1.0.0 - 26-Nov-2004
Decided that a new and better Skull FAQ had to be written, especially with the
available information at my fingertips that have found no legible way into
GameFAQs. I'm also sick of reading the same damn explanation for every skull
with the same horrible grammar, spelling, and descriptions each and every time.
So far, this is merely a compilation of all the information I've found. I
intend on amending this information and adding my own discoveries as time
passes. This took at least 3-4 hours to write as I wrote everything from
scratch, although the methods to doing many of these things have already been
[poorly] documented. About 4 root beers and 2 kittens gave their lives to
write this (and 2 domokuns just died for saying that).

BEFORE CONTACTING ME: Make sure your comment or question hasn't been mentioned
already in this FAQ. Check the notes section for tips, too!

I am absolutely willing to take comments, additions, and error reports regarding
this FAQ, just as long as you are willing to follow directions. You may email
me at with the subject containing "Halo 2".

Also, my last name really isn't Spartacus, but I would like to change it to that

II. The Skulls
+--------------+

a. Important Preliminary Notes

- Most skulls are found on *Legendary* and can be found on either single-player
or cooperative play.

- If you feel that Legendary is too hard, I suggest checking out the Legendary
FAQ written by Tom Race (halo_2_legendary.txt in this directory). He provides
excellent strategies in completing levels on Legendary and also includes some
skull descriptions to add fun challenges to the game.

- Skulls are picked up with the X button (pick up/swap weapons button). Only
one of the skulls (AFAIK, please confirm) can be kept as a weapon, and it can
be also kept as a third weapon.

- Some skulls will increase the difficulty of the game, others may decrease it,
while others may just add an interesting twist to the game. Combinations of
effects can be either fun, challenging, or may unlock an unknown secret that
we so desperately are searching for.

- Skull effects will last either a long period of time or until the player
restarts his/her Xbox. The effect of each skull can only be completely wiped
via this method (i.e. dropping the skull or dying won't negate the effect).

- Taking into account the aforementioned effect, you can gather the skulls a lot
easier by simply making a profile for each skull. You can probably take a
complete profile and copying it about 15 times, and save it at the checkpoint
right before each skull. The skull effects will affect all profiles, so you
can test the order of collection in a very short amount of time.

- There are no known rewards or unlockables with gathering skulls, but there may
be some very intriguing effects from acquiring the skulls in a specific,
yet unknown fashion. This is, of course, subject to change if someone finds
the theoretical method of collecting the skulls

- If you can confirm an unconfirmed skull or add an additional strategy, method,
or clarification to acquiring the skull, please feel free to contact me. You
will be credited for your submission, but if you find the information from
another source, please don't simply copy and paste the description. Instead,
you may link to the source, cite the source with your email, or "word it in
such a way that it portrays the same idea but with different wording."

- In the future, I hope to get maps of the levels with a marker where the skull
is, but first I need to contact Prima Games to see if I can use their maps.

- Also, if you have suggestions on how to improve my FAQ in general, go ahead
and contact me.

+--Cow-Bell-------------------Armory-----------------------II.b.i----+
After your diagnostics are complete, Sgt Johnson will tell you to
follow him onto the elevator. Simply stay put until Johnson says
"Would it help if I said 'Please?'" Now you may join him on the
elevator. Follow him into the monorail afterwards, making sure
to be as close to the window/door on the opposite side of the way
you came in. As the monorail moves to the end of this level, the
next room contains the skull. At the end of the room, there is a
stack of boxes; the skull is on the ground, behind the stack. You

In the chapter "Priority Shift", procede until you take out all
the enemies in the Armory and the following commons room. From
the entrance of Commons B.01, run over to the opposite corner of
the room, and take the stairs up to the alcove with the Covenant
turret. From here, look to the left and jump to the long risen
platform that spans across the room. Next, using one of the
slanted metal bars as a riser, jump to the 2 metal bars that span
across the room. Follow these to the end of the room (above the
doorway you entered), and you'll see another ledge to the left in
front of some windows with a trash can in the corner. Knock the

+--Blind----------------------Outskirts--------------------II.b.iii--+
At the start of this level, continue into the door straight ahead
as normal. When you enter, take notice of the rectangular light-
fixture. Jump onto either one, then Crouch Jump to the roof to
the left of the way you enter. If this is your first time, it
may take a few attempts. When on the roof, turn to your left,
towards the dark passage between the two buildings. Follow the
path to the end. There should be a pair of binoculars (that you
can pick up and use!), four frag grenades, and a skull. Pick up
the skull if you wish...

Effect: Your HUD will disappear for Campaign mode.

Notes: Flashlight doesn't work correctly after obtaining this.

+--Catch----------------------Metropolis-------------------II.b.iv---+
Starting from the chapter, "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both
of Us", proceed into the large area crawling with Jackal snipers.
Go ahead and snipe any that you can, then proceed to the middle
area. Grenade Jump your way onto the arc-like structure that
leads up onto a building. At the top of the arc, go left, wall-
hugging your way around the building. You should come across the
skull.

Effect: Every AI-controlled character (allies and enemies) will
throw more grenades. Their accuracy is basically the same, so
your allies won't be too much more helpful and the enemies will
be as deadly as they normally are.

Notes: Anything else I missed?
+-----------------------------------------------------------------[ ]+

+--Grunt-Birthday-Party-------The-Arbiter------------------II.b.v----+
When you get a Banshee at the start of the chapter "To The Hunt",
fly to the bottom of the station. Down here, you will see three
enormous, cylindrical thrusters. Fly over to the middle thruster
and search the top portion until you find some Grunts dancing in
a circle. They may be a little hidden by the horizontal support
beam, so make sure to circle around the area until you see them.
Land your Banshee nearby; the skull should be near the Grunts.

Effect: All enemies [but Hunters and Drones], when headshotted
while it doesn't have any active shields, will explode like a
plasma grenade.

Notes: Can be done on these enemies alive or dead. Can also be
used on allies, but the head must be completely unobstructed by
any form of shielding. Will not kill invincible allies e.g. Sgt.
Johnson. Not useful in using on coop partner whilst in Legendary.
